Claire Mont Smith’s practice moves back and forth across the boundaries of abstraction, placing emphasis on surface, texture, mark and a concern for the material world that surrounds us.

Bridge of Sighs, a series of six screen-print monotypes, are visual responses to a yearlong choral involvement with the music of the Monteverdi Vespers.  They also reference the ‘brown paper watercolours’ JMW Turner made of Venice at night. The group has the potential to be developed as an installation, but at this point three are being presented as individual works.
Claire is also presenting ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, an aquatint etching, using collage and chine colle and ‘Vespers’, a soap ground etching combined with silkscreen in a similar evocation of architecture, reflection, mystery.

She has a BA Fine Art from Reading University, an MFA from Chelsea College of Art, and an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths. She studied etching at the Royal Drawing School with Thomas Gosebruch and is a past chair of East London Printmakers.
Claire Mont Smith has exhibited widely, including Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair since 2018. Her work is represented in the collections of the V&A, Ruth Borchard/Courtauld, University of Sussex, Devon County Council and London Borough Tower Hamlets.
