Richard Foster is a printmaker based in the north of England. His latest work explores Neolithic monuments – monoliths, standing stones and tombs. He strips away context and location to focus on the sheer mass and volume of these monuments. Blind embossing is used to incorporate Neolithic symbols and carvings into his work.
The details of weather, flora and the everyday aspects of the Northern landscape are the focus of Richard prints. Trees and vegetation shaped by the northern climate are a constant theme of his work. Richard also celebrates the energy of plants in a series of works inspired by his garden and allotment. These prints are not botanical studies but seek to explore regeneration and growth.
Richard is currently exploring the painterly, softer quality of drypoint in contrast to the more linear mark-making of etching.
Richard trained as an art historian and the influence of English artists of the early 20th century can be detected in his work. He has exhibited throughout the UK and is the recipient of a Fenton Arts Trust Prize and has work in collections in the UK and Japan.
