Coming from a background in biology and fine woodworking, Lucas’s work currently explores both the limits and opportunities within materials, teetering in the space between tradition and experimental exploration. From his experience in crafts, trades, and scientific research, Lucas is interested in subverting the habits of dominance and control over materials that so often permeate our culture of dominance over the material world. In challenging his own conventions of relating to materials, he relates to materials as things with their own autonomy and deserving of respect and attentiveness in the process of making.
What can happen when we treat materials as co-collaborators rather than things we need to control and dominate? What implications could this have for how we reframe how we relate to our natural world? These are questions that he brings into his practice as he experiments with mediums and materials resulting in an intuitive and vulnerable practice where the intimacy between maker and materials is on display.
