Printwalks is a collaboration between Catherine and Martha Orbach (aunt/niece) developed over the last 10 years.
Their practice centres around shared walks, observations of a particular place at a particular time.  The walk generates drawings which come back to the studio. They spend time with the drawings, exchange impressions and use rough collage to explore ideas for composition.  Finally, they cut paper stencils to develop a screen print. It’s a simple, lo-tech collaborative process. They enjoy an openness to the opportunities that come through the process, rather than simply executing a planned design.
The three prints here were made on a damp and rainy February day in Glasgow from drawings taken around Queens Park, enjoying the Glasgow skyline with its mix of Victorian church towers and industrial architecture and of course, the duck pond. The colour palette is muted, the visibility on the day limited.
Catherine is based in Hastings, Martha in Glasgow. They work in both places, as and when they can.
Catherine trained at Edinburgh College of Art and Martha at Camberwell and the London College of Communication. Martha is also a trained gardener.
Their work has been seen at the Royal Scottish Academy, in Print International at Ty Pawb, Glasgow Print Studio, the London Art Fair (with Glasgow Print Studio) and Hepworth Wakefield Print Fair.
