Atsushi Matsuoka explores expressing his emotions with clear-engraved shapes of wood engraving print.

He noticed some smooth end-grain trunks and brunches cut down without apparent use in the garden and borders of forests and roads. He started thinking about trying wood engraving on them.

Wood engraving print features combinations of solid black shapes and clear white blanks. They have enchantment, and his early work is a black-and-white expression. He is still attracted to it and makes one plate monochrome work. Adding that, he has sought out multi-plate coloured prints these years.

He graduated from Kanazawa College of Art with a degree in 1995 in craft design and from Tottori University in Forest Ecology. His acquisition of these degrees influenced his work, as his wood engraving skills are self-taught.

He has exhibited wildly since 2008 in a number of solo and larger mixed exhibitions, including the Society of Wood Engravers’ Annual Exhibitions and Exhibition of 13 Japanese Wood Engravers.
