Martha Schlegels’ work examines nature’s untamed force and the enticing potential of the abandoned. Her intimate connection to the ocean and its inhabitants is a recurring motif in her art. She uses a variety of printmaking processes, such as polymer photogravure, relief print, and alternative methods like contact printing with botanicals. In response to the WCPF 2023 open call, Schlegel submitted a photopolymer of a seascape. This print depicts Schlegel's longing for and keen admiration of the sea. As she sees one image as the starting point for a multitude of tales, she invites the spectator to fill in the blanks with their own imagination. This process is encouraged by providing viewers with several options for the artwork's title. Schlegel is a self-taught artist from Germany who lives in Scotland and has previously resided and worked in Benin, Croatia, and France. Her academic credentials include degrees in political economy, social science, and marine science. Schlegels’ creative endeavours are driven by her insatiable curiosity as well as the delicate dance of absorbing new environments while discovering one's own place in them.
