Mark Mindels' abstract landscapes play with the boundaries of representation, creating loose evocations of the forest, using this site as a way to explore the effect of different marks, textures and compositions. Mindels' practice consists of making observational charcoal drawing on Hampstead Heath, which provide the reference for their monchromatic monotypes. Mindels expressive painterly investigation into the different textures and tones of Hampstead Heath is enhanced by the intimate associations they hold for this environment, as it was heavily frequented by the artist in their youth, and somewhere they went to escape feelings of queer shame. Mindels' work is characterised by loose fluid brushmarks, which they layer in subtle tonal gradations, creating space and light in their compositions, whilst also exploring the formal potency of mark-making, and it's ability to convey emotion.
