Fouzia Zafar’s work explores the concept of play to develop the use of unusual materials, tools and processes to create images. She often makes images of objects and places that hold memories for her. Photography and collage are often intermediate stages in the practice where play allows images to be deconstructed and then reinvented using the etching process. Fouzia’s practice thrives on pushing the craft of making but also embracing what it offers by chance. Fouzia’s recent prints are based on the Arlington Baths Glasgow, the oldest Victorian baths in Europe. Shape, pattern and texture are celebrated in these prints, helping explore the histories these places hold and to create a nostalgic atmosphere. Fouzia graduated from the City & Guilds of London Art School in 2013 with an MA in Fine art with distinction. Upon graduating she received the Gwen May Student Award from the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and was shortlisted for the Clifford Chance Printmaking Award. She was voted Printmakers’ Printer at Cumbria Printfest in 2015 and was elected as a full member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 2018. She exhibits widely both nationally and internationally. Highlights include: The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition & Print Fair, The Royal Scottish Academy and the National Original Print Fair. Her work is held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Ashmolean Museum, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and Scarborough Gallery.
