Fi Smart’s work reflects her determination, through etchings, to try to heighten and deepen public understanding of and connection with nature. She is drawn, in particular, to the unnoticed and undervalued elements of nature such as soil and weeds and seeks to retrain the eyes of the viewer to discover the very real joy that can be had in looking closely at nature rather than passing by with a superficial glance. Fi’s prints are invitations and reminders to pause, get close and notice nature. Fi’s recent prints arise from time spent sitting and observing the way plants in Devon banks grow - respectful of one another - and the seemingly empty areas of soil between wild plants. There is no life without soil and it connects everything together yet it is a difficult and unglamorous subject. She uses detailed drawings into hard ground and soft ground etching to focus the viewer’s attention more closely on nature and to encourage them to continue this observation beyond galleries. Fi graduated from Plymouth University with a First Class BA in Illustration, won the 2017 John Ruskin Prize Student and Graduate Prize with a narrative ceramic piece and has exhibited in a number of mixed exhibitions including the Royal West of England Academy.
