David Robertson is inspired by nature. He walks and sketches in the countryside, creating wood engravings from these drawings back in his studio. His favourite places to explore include the rugged North Devon coastline and the National Parks of Dartmoor, the Peak District and Snowdonia. 'Devil’s Kitchen' is a dramatic crack in the cliffs in the Ogwen valley in Snowdonia, created in response to a residency in Mawddach. 'South Circle, Avebury' was created as a diptych as I wanted to show the texture and monumental scale of the stones up close simultaneously with its positioning within the stone circle. David is an elected member of the Society of Wood Engravers and a QEST scholar. He has been shortlisted for the Boodle Hatfield Prize and won the John Purcell Paper Prize at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. Last year, David had a residency at the University of Bath curated by The Holburne Museum with a large-scale print installation. His work is held in public collections at the Royal Library, Windsor; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Manchester Metropolitan University and at CAFA, Beijing, as well as private collections around the world.
