Carolyn Gowdy’s mantra … ‘Life is an adventure; life is a gift’ … She aims to preserve a spirit of hope and possibility in her art. Gowdy views life as a spiritual journey and humanity as a work in progress. She is interested in bringing joy and wonder to the work through her drawings, etchings, collages, paintings, words, and treasured objects. Last year Gowdy worked with the theme of Hope/ Pandora Re-Visited over a period of months as we gradually emerged from the Pandemic, revisiting the ancient myth of Pandora. What’s not remembered very often is that she managed to preserve hope for humanity even after catastrophic flurries of darkness and despair had escaped into the world. In tribute to Pandora’s spirit Gowdy chose to focus on her transformative attributes rather than on her tarnished reputation, shaped over time by a patriarchal culture. Gowdy has worked internationally as an acclaimed artist/illustrator for decades. Her work has appeared in major publications, as well as on gallery and museum walls. Born in Seattle she was first a student at the University of Washington and Rhode Island School of Design before coming to London in the late 1970s to join the illustration course at the Royal College of Art. She has won numerous distinctions as a painter, printmaker, and illustrator and has exhibited regularly in the UK and worldwide in various juried and invitational art exhibitions.
