Caroline Macdonald is a maker and educator, who recently graduated from the RCA with an MA in Print. She combines ancient history with everyday materials combining different generations of print media across two- and three-dimensional work.

Caroline combines ancient history, with everyday materials. In ‘Near Distance’ she combines photographed fragments from the Parthenon Marbles with contemporary ‘fossils’ such as composite packaging to make large free standing, printed structures. She integrates different generations of print media from traditional paper marbling to digital glitches. Both marbling and glitches speak of the manipulation of chance marks and the disruption of an ordered system to generate new meanings. The digital drag of the glitch introduces a stack like ordering of the marks, like the geological stacking patterns occurring in the earth’s sediment over deep geological time. The stacking element is carried through to the flattening of the composite packaging and the final folding of the structures and prints. The glitch in her work is a form of disruptive patterning as well a nod to failure and precarity.
