Born in South Africa, artist Bronwen Paterson’s work reflects the deep connection she feels with her birth country and its people; she attempts to pay homage to the complex country from which she originates. Now living in London, the symbolic and sacred ideas, images and objects both natural and spiritual which characterize her homeland are still close to her heart. Her work explores this identity and belonging. The nature of culture and identity and its ownership is complicated. These are especially potent influences for her and through the forms and textures she uses in her imagery she creates her own ‘species’, belonging to their own ‘tribe’ and speaking a unique language made up from all that has influenced and inspired her. Paterson constructs symbolic narratives that serve as her own personal idols celebrating her heritage. Paterson’s work is made up of carefully considered layering, constructed from a combination of screen print, monoprint, hand sewing and mixed media. The result is a one multi-dimensional surface, luxurious and tactile in appearance. The addition of hand sewing creates an embossed effect, and the stitches seems to pulsate with a quiet energy. By beautifying the work with beading and found objects, Paterson makes her images powerful symbols that take on an almost religious intensity. Paterson graduated from University of the Arts London with a degree in Surface Design. She has exhibited widely, the highlights being The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and being shortlisted for the Sunny Art Prize. She also has work in the V&A Print Collection and the archive in the Scarborough Museums Trust.
