Bina Shah is a London based visual artist and printmaker. Her work is site-responsive, deep rooted in both urban and rural environments. She makes her own botanical inks to stain papers and incorporates earth pigments gathered from the location to make her own printing inks. Her work evolves from experimenting with different materials and combining printmaking techniques that often lead her to unexpected discoveries. Her recent series of abstract monotypes were created during a print residency at Tyrone Guthrie Centre, using folded Japanese washi paper to create 'blind' abstract shapes in her prints, inspired by a visit to Valentia Island Slate Quarry in Ireland. She used found, weathered slate roof tiles to transfer the delicate patina and gathered pigments [slate dust, clay ] from the quarry in order to tell the story, giving the a sense of place to the series - Scláta [Celtic word for slate]. She has exhibited widely and received numerous awards for printmaking including: Winner of London Centre of Book Arts [LCBA] at East London Printmakers Festival of Print 2023 Excellence in Printmaking Prize ELPS at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2021, Shortlisted for the Boodle Hatfield Print Prize 2020 Woolwich Contemporary Prize at the annual National Original Print Exhibition 2019.
