The medium predominately used by Alex is woodcut print making. The intimate play between mark making, the speed of printing is both challenging and exciting, so too is the experimentation with colour and texture of the wood, both the abstract and pictorial aesthetic help to manifest a stark and emotional effect. Alex Booker's passion for music, film, nature and a keen interest in philosophy, informs his art practice. His visual language takes its form and inspiration from books, photos, travel sketches and found imagery. The themes and ideas are intended to achieve quiet, thoughtful and abstract narratives between all works. The darkness and intensity of the post WWI German Expressionists, slap stick melancholia of Bas Jan Ader and the French-Algerian philosopher and author Albert Camus form the key influences on Alex's work. Camus’s writing is timeless and lyrical, communicating the realities of the human condition, our existential challenges and the philosophical idea of the absurd.
